Online meeting was held May 6 between the executives of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan and representatives of the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong, with the support of experts from the UNDP Global Program in Singapore and the UNDP Office in Uzbekistan.
Umida Tukhtasheva, Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan, delivered a welcome speech, and presented information on the activities of the Agency, its goals and objectives, as well as ongoing projects.
Then, Lawrence Chung, Principal International Liaison and Training Officer of the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong, made a presentation on the anti-corruption system and important reforms carried out in the country, as well as large-scale anti-corruption measures and coordination of government agencies in this area.
For reference: Since the 1970s, Hong Kong has carried out extensive anti-corruption reforms that have resulted in a sharp decline in various forms of corruption and the emergence of strong government agencies and active civil society institutions. The Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong has set an example for many anti-corruption agencies around the world.
The parties also discussed the role of civil society institutions in the fight against corruption, the training of civil servants in the fight against corruption, the system for assessing and monitoring their knowledge in this area. In addition, detailed information was provided on the organizational and legal structure of the Commission, including the work of individual units in the field of law and order, prevention, education and international cooperation.
The meeting discussed joint plans, goals and objectives to ensure the effective development of long-term cooperation.
In particular, the Uzbek side proposed to organize training for the Agency’s officers on the best practices of the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong.
The participants of the virtual meeting noted that the implementation of projects on such issues as ensuring the openness of the activities of government agencies, strengthening public control over the activities of government agencies, as well as mechanisms for interaction with civil society institutions is useful and important in all respects.
Following the meeting, the sides decided to organize trainings for representatives of the two departments in specific areas in order to exchange best practices, as well as to involve UNDP experts in this practice.
