This April 20, a delegation of Uzbekistan headed by Akmal Burkhanov, Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency, arrived in the United States.
The main purpose of the visit is to establish direct contacts with the US anti-corruption authorities and other relevant organizations, as well as to discuss the prospects for further cooperation.
On the first day of the visit, the delegation met with Robert Cordy, Partner at the Massachusetts-based McDermott Will & Emery LLP, Sarah Walters and Mark Schreiber, experts with extensive experience in overseeing US law enforcement corruption investigations.
McDermott Will & Emery is one of the major international law firms operating in the US and around the world, and the firm’s lawyers represent the interests of the public and private sectors, industrial and financial enterprises.
For reference: Robert Cordy served as a Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court for 16 years. He also served in senior positions with the State Public Defenders Office, then the State Department of Revenue, the State Ethics Commission, and the US Attorney’s Office, and briefly served as a Chief of the Public Corruption Unit.
Sarah Walters has devoted most of her prosecutorial work to financial crime cases, including violations of foreign corruption laws, market manipulation, investment advisor fraud, and tax evasion.
Mark Schreiber has extensive experience in investigating and prosecuting corruption cases involving government officials, investigating healthcare crimes, securities, tax fraud and public procurement.
During the meeting, the American side provided useful information on the specifics of the consideration of cases of corruption, the work of law enforcement agencies and supervision of investigations of corruption crimes.
The parties exchanged views on a number of issues, including aspects that should be taken into account as preventive measures to reduce the number of corruption offenses, effective measures taken by the government to combat corruption, as well as the role of modern information technologies in preventing corruption.
