This May 17, a meeting was held at the Tashkent State Economic University addressing the issues of combating corruption in higher education system.
Representatives of the Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education and law enforcement agencies attended the meeting. They discussed the implementation of the Sphere without Corruption Project in the country’s higher education institutions.
In particular, it was noted that the Agency is studying the factors that give rise to corruption in higher education institutions, the conditions that lead to it, and also monitors the use of budgetary funds and compliance with the law in public procurement.
The meeting participants noted that cases of nepotism are allowed in higher education institutions, that is, most teachers are close relatives of officials in universities. Also, it was said that the number of appeals to the Agency with complaints is growing that, when applying for a job in higher education institutions, kinship or acquaintance is among key criteria, and when bonuses and additional payments are calculated, a large share is accrued to relatives, which violates the criteria of social justice.
At the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the elimination of such negative situations, the prevention of corruption and nepotism, the creation of an impartial, fair, open and transparent mechanism in the system.
Students and teachers of higher education institutions were also given the necessary recommendations on how to prevent corruption and how to act in similar situation.
