This November 4, a delegation led by the Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan visited the Republic of Latvia, which took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan and the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of Latvia.
During the visit, issues of developing and signing a cooperation program for 2023 between the competent authorities in the field of combating corruption of the two countries were discussed. In particular, the parties exchanged views on the development and implementation of anti-corruption policy, the introduction of information technologies and electronic products into activities, interaction with civil society institutions, ensuring integrity in the business community, and also discussed the specifics of the Latvian Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau’s activities and its collaboration with journalists.
Special attention was paid to the work carried out in Latvia on the introduction and development of the asset declaration system, in which an important component was the creation of a convenient mechanism for filling in the necessary documents by civil servants. The parties also discussed Latvia’s membership in the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO) and the implementation of international standards established by this group.
As part of the visit, the Uzbek delegation held meeting with representatives of Transparency International Latvia (Delna), during which they discussed the role of openness and transparency of government agencies in improving the position of Uzbekistan in the Corruption Perceptions Index, as well as the role of NGOs in this process.
The parties also discussed the features of activities in the field of development of an anti-corruption strategy, and issues of increasing the capacity of NGOs in Uzbekistan.
For reference: Delna was founded in 1998 as the Latvian chapter of Transparency International. Its goal is to develop an open, ethical, and democratic society free from corruption in politics, business and mutual relations.
In addition, the Uzbek delegation met with the Director of the Riga Graduate School of Law and the agreement was reached to cooperate in the preparation of materials for the Virtual Academy, which is planned to be opened in Uzbekistan.
Following the meetings, the Latvian departments and organizations expressed their readiness to implement mutually beneficial proposals presented by the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan.
